My girlfriend loves IPAs and orders them at almost any opportunity. She is a fan of the genre, so to speak, and she thought this was a decent, not great, IPA. I, on the other hand, have an ambivalent relationship with IPAs. I like classics such as O'Dell's IPA, and I am a fan of many other offerings through this service--the Banker's Hands IPA, Blood Orange IPA, and Helical Haze IPA, to name a few. But I also despise many IPAs. Bad IPAs feel to me like an abrasive cluster*** of hops that fail to add up to any sort of satisfying, interesting, or otherwise generously-defined "meaningful" sensory experience, sort of like the beer equivalent of listening to lousy Captain Beefheart cover band. This IPA lands in that category for me. I would describe the aftertaste and texture as "grapefruit cigarette ash", which might be a good name for Captain Beefheart cover band.
